Arranged in six groups: I. Vocal scores (2). II. Orchestra parts (30). III. Vocal parts (26). IV. Chorus parts (20). V. Promptbooks (4 in 7 vols.). VI. Dialogue parts (17). The vocal scores are in French, in two editions. One is by Gérard, Paris (1866, pl. no. C. M. 10,459), and the other by Heugel, Paris (pl. no. H.7909). The orchestra parts are manuscript in two sets. Set one carries the stamp of Edward Uhlig, 229 E. 12th St., N.Y. The vocal parts include 16 in English manuscript, several bearing names of performers, and 10 in German manuscript. The chorus parts are manuscript, in German. The promptbooks include two typed books, in English, one manuscript book in a bound lined ledger bearing the stamp of J. Silver's Musical Library, 242 West 31st St., N. Y., and one book in four volumes consisting of a printed libretto in English cut and pasted onto lined leaves and annotated extensively. It carries the indication "Wm. Forrester, Boston Ideal Opera Co." The dialogue parts include nine parts in English manuscript and eight typed parts in English.

Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of Jewish ancestry. He had a strong influence in popular music in Europe, and was one of the originators of the operetta, of which he wrote more than one hundred. His works were noted for their elements of satire and parody; two for which he is particularly known are the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld and the opera The Tales of Hoffman . Henri Meilhac was a French dramatist, who often collaborated with Ludovic Halévy.
